I took advantage of the warmer weather today to do the annual March pruning of my clematis vines. The trellis is on the east side of my house which means it doesn’t get afternoon sun and therefore stays a moderate size.
I have 2 clematis varieties on the trellis – one that blooms on old and new wood (more on new wood I think because most blooms are concentrated on the top) and one smaller-flowering one that blooms only on new wood. I took off the whole mop on top of my larger purple/blue flowering clematis and my trellis looks pretty empty now. But once a steady stream of warmer days hits, the vine grows quickly.
