A few weeks ago I wrote about discovering that my neighbors have a large, older witch hazel in their backyard which they were unaware of. Yesterday I went over to see if it was in bloom since I thought it was a hamamelis virginiana – a native witch hazel that blooms in the fall. Sure enough, there were the frilly yellow pom-pom-like flowers, as seen in the photo below.
While I was taking pictures across the street, there was a tall package sitting on my front steps. This was going to be a 3 witch hazel day because inside the box were 2 witch hazels I had ordered from RareFindNursery in New Jersey. I had thought long and hard about which ones to buy and had decided on Blue Moon and Aurora, both winter blooming varieties with nice fall foliage. Both plants still have some beautifully colored leaves on them. Now I just need to get them in the ground….
